Saving our planet is all in a day’s work for Conservation International (CI) whose board includes Hollywood actor Harrison Ford and green pioneer Dr. Yvonne Lui Lai Kwan. Their next mission? To protect China’s endangered sea turtles.
Dr. Yvonne Lui Lai Kwan’s charity The Yvonne L. K. Lui Foundation has been a key supporter of this initiative since 2011, when a Green Sea Turtle Tracking Project was founded by Conservation International and China’s State Oceanic Administration. The Yvonne L. K. Lui Foundation supported the development of the project by funding the release and tracking of green turtles from Huidong Harbour in Guangdong, China. The data were recorded by CI to track route and behaviour of this endangered species, resulting in the creation of a dedicated conservation action plan.
Employing the principle of “edutainment”, Dr. Yvonne Lui Lai Kwan also contributed to a Blue On Tour marine film festival that toured Xiamen University, Hong Kong Ocean Park, Beijing Normal University, Ocean University of China in Qingdao, Ocean University of Dalian, Sun Yat Sen University in Guangzhou and Zhejiang University, Hangzhou.
The informative films – Andrea, Queen of Mantas, Into the Abyss, Humpback from Fire to Ice, The Dolphin Defender, Strange Days and Planet Earth – were screened across the country to 500 students.
Open days for kids with family activities and conservation-led competitions were a big part of the interactive and engaging festival. Guests included government officials, scientists, celebrities and candidates for awards and their families.
